Granola Three Ways (and what to do with it)

Updated: Jul 16, 2019

Granola is very simple to make and to customize, but many people are too scared to make it. I was at first, and when I finally decided to give it a try, I burnt it! My advice is to keep a close watch on the oven while baking, and be sure to cut the cooking time down if you decide to make less than what my recipe calls for. I got some inspiration and ideas from other recipes, but ultimately created my own ratios and flavor combinations to share with you guys! I always use honey as a sweetener, but this recipe is very easy to make vegan if you use maple or agave instead! If any of you decide to make your own version using my base recipe, please send me pictures! It is super fun to get creative with different mix-ins, such as nuts, dried fruits, and spices.

Once you have made a big batch of granola, you may be wondering what to do with all of that. For this reason, I have compiled a list of 10 ways to use granola. Some are obvious, and others are more creative and unique! Please enjoy these tips and the recipe, and don't forget to scroll all the way down for my two variations!

10 Ways to Use Homemade Granola

1. Granola makes a great snack, especially for on-the-go!

2. It tastes super good on top of yogurt parfaits, especially with a little fruit as well!

3. My favorite way to use granola is on top of overnight oats or bowls of warm oatmeal.

4. Smoothie bowls also benefit from the crunch of some yummy granola.

5. Granola can even be soaked in milk as a healthy cereal alternative!

6. Try topping a banana or apple slices with some nut butter and granola.

7. Similarly, you could put a banana, some nut butter, and granola in a tortilla to make a nice breakfast wrap.

8. Coat granola with melted chocolate to make some granola clusters as a delicious treat

9. Top ice cream with granola for a nice crunchy element.

10. Place some granola INSIDE of a pb&j sandwich to make it super fancy and add texture!

Basic Granola Recipe

Ingredients:

- 1 cup rolled oats

- 1 tablespoon flavorless oil (such as coconut, vegetable, or canola oil)

- 1 tablespoon sweetener (honey, agave, maple syrup, etc.)

Steps:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. Combine ingredients in a bowl until oats are well coated.

3. Spread mixture onto a cookie sheet lined with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.

4. Place in the oven for about 10-12 minutes,

mixing at least once halfway through.

*Tip: Keep an eye on the oven throughout

cooking time to make sure the granola does not

burn. It may take more or less time, depending

on desired texture.

To make a pumpkin spice variation:

Add 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon and 1/4 tsp each of ground ginger, ground cloves, and ground nutmeg into oat mixture before baking. Before the last minute of cooking, add pepitas and place back in the oven to finish cooking.

To make a chocolate peanut butter variation:

Add 1 1/2 tsp of cocoa powder to the oat mixture and REPLACE the oil with 2 tbsp peanut butter. Combine well and cook as normal. In the final minute of cooking, add peanuts to the top and allow to complete cooking. As soon as the granola comes out of the oven and is done, sprinkle chocolate chips on top and allow them to melt in, then stir once cooled.
